While the speculations about the next-gen iPhone are rampant, the rumor mill has received its first detail about the Pixel 8 series. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro could benefit from a huge camera upgrade that could put the already-bad HDR on iPhones to shame.
According to the developer Kuba Wojciechowski, Google is working on bringing staggered HDR support to its Pixel 8 lineup. He discovered strings of code in the Google Camera Go app that point to the next big upgrade for the upcoming Pixels.
In simpler terms, the next Google phone will be able to capture different exposures simultaneously. This will allow the devices to have faster capture times. As a result, you are unlikely to get blurred photos, which are caused by misalignment of frames due to movement.
However, if you are a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro user, you are unlikely to get support for the staggered HDR feature. This is because the Samsung 50MP ISOCELL GN1 sensor used in this year’s Pixels doesn’t support staggered HDR. And it leaves room for speculations that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will feature a new camera sensor. Many believe that it could be Samsung’s 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor because it supports the staggered HDR feature.
By contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro is likely to retain the 48MP camera from the iPhone 14 Pro, which performs amazingly well in RAW mode but doesn’t show much improvement over the iPhone 13 Pro for the average iPhone user. That being said, we are still a year away from the launch of either of the two Apple or Google flagship smartphones, and things could change.
