You can have one or two side panels, depending on how you use Gmail
Previously, there was a single panel available that gave access to a menu of your various Gmail categories and labels (such as the Inbox, Starred, Trash, etc.). The users were able to edit this panel to display either icons and labels or just icons by clicking on the three-line icon in the upper left (also known as a “hamburger”). But now with the new update, Google has included a second side panel that provides you quick access to various apps: Mail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet.
In case you are not comfortable with having two side panels (especially on a laptop display), by clicking on the hamburger icon in the upper-left corner, you can make the side panel with the categories vanish completely.
You can discover different categories by dragging your cursor over the Mail icon in the new panel, if you are planning to go to a different category or label in your Gmail.
Click on the hamburger icon again to get your second panel back if you prefer it better.
HOW TO GET RID OF THE APPS PANEL:
It’s quite easy to be free of their icons — and that extra side panel as well if you don’t use Google Chat or Meet. This is how you can get rid of them:
- Select Settings > Customize.
- You’ll be invited to choose which apps to use in Gmail. Uncheck Google Chat and Google Meet and click on Done.
- Click on Reload.
There you go! You have a single familiar side panel now. The hamburger icon will just toggle between a side panel with icons and labels or just icons just like before.
You can return to the way things were if you’re tired of everything, by clicking on Settings > Go back to the original view. It’s onto Google for how long they have that option available.
